5 Myths About Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is a problem for many men of all ages. Among men in all age groups, nearly 30 percent complain of premature ejaculation, according to Psychology Today. More men are affected by premature ejaculation than erectile dysfunction. A study of close to 5,000 men between the ages of 18 and 65 found that premature ejaculation affected 31 percent of men while only 21 percent were affected by erectile dysfunction. The study was published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

There are lots of other myths about premature ejaculation. Many traditional beliefs about the condition are just plain wrong. As a result, many men don’t seek treatments that could help.

#1 Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation Are the Same Thing

These two conditions are completely different. With erectile dysfunction disorder, a man has trouble maintaining an erection during sex. Premature ejaculation, on the other hand, refers to the inability to control ejaculation. Some men with premature ejaculation do also have erectile dysfunction. But the two disorders are not the same thing.

#2  Premature Ejaculation Is Due to Anxiety

Premature ejaculation is caused by several different factors. However, a psychological condition is not one of those things. In fact, research has found that men with this condition have normal levels of anxiety.

#3 Premature Ejaculation Does Not Affect the Partner

Premature ejaculation affects both partners. It can make having a healthy sexual relationship very tough. Research has found that partners of men suffering from this condition tend to be sexually dissatisfied, which can lead to issues in the relationship.

#4 Premature Ejaculation Only Affects Young Men

Many people believe that premature ejaculation only affects young men. They find that it decreases as a person ages and learns to control it. However, that is not true. The prevalence remains steady from the teen years to age 50 and older.

#5 Premature Ejaculation Happens Every Time

Research indicates that premature ejaculation is dependent upon the situation. Some men have decent control with some partners but suffer premature ejaculation with others. Also, stress, such as job loss or money issues, can make this problem worse.
